Awards

Roses are constantly evolving, with breeders striving to combine much loved characteristics from traditional favourites, with new hybrids, to give outstanding performance in a variety of garden situations.

In their quest for the ultimate rose, breeders throughout the world enter their best selections into on-going national and international trials. They are assessed by experts on a range of criteria, such as disease resistance and flower abundance, with the best performers awarded accordingly.

The Gold Standard Roses are a result of a joint initiative between professional rose breeders represented by BARB (British Association of Rose Breeders) and NIAB (National Institute of Agricultural Botany).  For more information about these trials click here.  Mattocks Gold Standard Roses include Temptress, Red Finesse, Lancashire, Silver Ghost and Champagne Moment.

Award of Garden Merit (AGM) – an AGM indicates that it has been recommended by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The AGM is only awarded after careful assessment and draws upon the wealth of experience and knowledge held by the RHS Plant Committees and staff. Assessments can take place in a number of ways, such as trials at one of the RHS’s gardens, visits to specialist collections and round-table discussions drawing on the expertise of Committee members. The award is for the species or cultivar, not an individual plant. The AGM also indicates the hardiness rating and is a practical guide to the suitable growing conditions.
